If you've lived your life in France throughout the last 7 decades you probably find this book a lot better than I did。 Ernaux has written her biography in a form she sure is proud of, as it mixes third-person observations of a (i。e。 her) life with the collective "we" representing a certain time。 Unfortunately large parts of the book are listings。 First, an observation of a feeling followed by numerous objects/memories that materialized the feeling。 Sometimes the listing is so long that you forge If you've lived your life in France throughout the last 7 decades you probably find this book a lot better than I did。 Ernaux has written her biography in a form she sure is proud of, as it mixes third-person observations of a (i。e。 her) life with the collective "we" representing a certain time。 Unfortunately large parts of the book are listings。 First, an observation of a feeling followed by numerous objects/memories that materialized the feeling。 Sometimes the listing is so long that you forget what they were suppose to emphasize。 That 70% of the things listed is of French origin (obviously, since Ernaux grew up in France) makes it almost unbearable。 Mentioning French authors, movies, actors, politicians, public figures, events and places dating back to the 40'ies makes it REALLY hard for a foreign person (born in the 90'ies) to connect with the content! Especially when the life depicted has no measures of extraordinaire。That be said, I did actually gain something important from this book。 It made me realize that the the topics of the passionate conversations I have in my life, spawned from frustration, anger or a feeling of unfairness, is not unique for my time。 That I give far too little credit or thought to the complexities (and lengths) of my parents' and grandparents' lives, as if a year in their 20'ies counts less than the previous year in mine。 That their collective demand for change was probably as passionate as what I demand today when it comes to equal rights。 I didn't realize that, maybe because it's just nature's law that you reach a age where you simply don't understand the new demands of the youth because you see them in contrast to your own (to some the right to safe sex may seem more essential than the right to consensual sex。 But should we stop demanding just because we've improved over time?)。 I'll keep those realisations with me, but it's highly unlikely I'll ever read another book from Ernaux。 。。。more

Es hat lange gedauert, bis mich das Buch gefesselt hat。 Ich fand die atemlose, für mich sehr distanzierte Erzählweise einerseits recht anstrengend, aber auch besonders speziell。 Als würde man beim Durchblättern emotionslos die Bilder beschreiben, die man sieht。 Ein Erzählfluss ohne Punkt und Komma, ohne Innehalten! Das Buch erzählt neben der Biografie der Autorin auch die Geschichte Frankreichs, sowohl politisch wie auch kulturell。 Da ich nicht alle Personen und Ereignisse kannte, fand ich es au Es hat lange gedauert, bis mich das Buch gefesselt hat。 Ich fand die atemlose, für mich sehr distanzierte Erzählweise einerseits recht anstrengend, aber auch besonders speziell。 Als würde man beim Durchblättern emotionslos die Bilder beschreiben, die man sieht。 Ein Erzählfluss ohne Punkt und Komma, ohne Innehalten! Al deed ik mijn best, het wilde echt niet lukken met dit boek。 In 'De jaren' vertelt Annie Ernaux over haar leven, en dat doet ze in een bijzondere vorm。 Haar herinneringen worden niet verteld vanuit de ik-persoon, ze creëert afstand door te vertellen over 'haar' en 'zij'。 De persoonlijke herinneringen die maar sporadisch langskomen zouden in feite herinneringen van ons allemaal kunnen zijn。 Maar het merendeel van de herinneringen in dit boek komen uit het collectief geheugen。 Het is een opsommi Al deed ik mijn best, het wilde echt niet lukken met dit boek。 In 'De jaren' vertelt Annie Ernaux over haar leven, en dat doet ze in een bijzondere vorm。 Haar herinneringen worden niet verteld vanuit de ik-persoon, ze creëert afstand door te vertellen over 'haar' en 'zij'。 De persoonlijke herinneringen die maar sporadisch langskomen zouden in feite herinneringen van ons allemaal kunnen zijn。 Maar het merendeel van de herinneringen in dit boek komen uit het collectief geheugen。 Het is een opsomming van verschillende wereldse gebeurtenissen, van welgekende reclamespots (althans voor de Fransen) of van politieke gebeurtenissen uit die tijd。 Ernaux schrijft op die momenten in de "wij-vorm", maar net dat creëert jammer genoeg afstand。 Wie is die wij? Wij uit het dorp? Wij boomers? Wij, de Franse natie? Ik voel me niet geroepen of aangesproken。 Ik ken ook te weinig van die Franse geschiedenis。 Nee, ik weet niet wie Debré en Malraux zijn waardoor ik me lichtjes te jong en te dom voel。。。 en daar werd ik niet bepaald vrolijk van 🥲。Bovendien prikkelt Ernaux me niet voldoende om op onderzoek uit te gaan。 Godzijdank kwam er af en toe een Edith Piaf en Simonne de Beauvoir langs (MON DIEU, DIE KEN IK! 🤭)Verder is 'uitentreuren' één van mijn favoriete woorden。 Maar als dat uitentreuren herhaald wordt begint het blijkbaar toch wat tegen te steken 🤔😆。Uiteraard kan die Ernaux wel ongelooflijk goed schrijven。 Niet voor niets is 'Het voorval' mij wel enorm goed bevallen。 Maar de schrijfkunst op zich was deze keer niet voldoende 🤷🏼‍♀️。'De toekomst is te onmetelijk om zich er een voorstelling van te maken, ze komt eraan, meer niet。' 。。。more

The truth is that it is all of these。Although the book is an atypical Ernaux, I will say that it is definitely her strongest one to date。 I felt like I was taken on a journey on, mostly, unknown territory。 This is not Ernaux’s most personal book but it is her most ambitious and far reaching one。 。。。more
